The Short Answer
For most families, the easiest trip is La Fortuna plus a calm Guanacaste beach, flying in and out of Liberia. The beaches at Conchal, Flamingo, Potrero and Playa Hermosa are about 30 minutes to an hour from the airport, the dry season is reliable, and La Fortuna is about 3 hours away for the volcano, hot springs and hanging bridges. Our beach pick is the all-inclusive Westin Reserva Conchal.
If you fly into San José, swap Guanacaste for Manuel Antonio, where kids can see monkeys and sloths on an easy guided walk and swim at the calm beaches inside the national park.
The Best Family Bases Compared
| Base | Why kids like it | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| La Fortuna | Hot springs, waterfall, hanging bridges, river floats | Rain any month; the waterfall has about 530 steps |
| Guanacaste (Conchal, Flamingo, Hermosa) | Calm beaches, big resorts, short airport transfer | Strong sun and heat from March to April |
| Manuel Antonio | Easy wildlife, calm park beaches | Steep hill road and hotel stairs; park closed Tuesdays |
| Monteverde | Night walks, zip lines, hanging bridges | Cool, windy and wet; winding drive up |
| Tamarindo | Surf lessons, walkable town | Busy, with bars; waves at the main beach |
| Nosara | Surf camps for older kids and teens | Dusty roads and strong waves; better for confident swimmers |

Tips for Traveling with Kids
- Keep drives under 4 hours and do them in the morning. Mountain roads are winding, so pack motion-sickness remedies.
- Book car seats with your rental. Costa Rican law requires child restraints for young children, and rental companies supply them for a fee.
- Choose calm beaches. Rip currents are common on open Pacific and Caribbean beaches, and many have no lifeguards. Conchal, Flamingo, Potrero, Playa Hermosa, Sámara and the beaches inside Manuel Antonio National Park are usually the calmest.
- Take a guide for wildlife walks. Guides carry spotting scopes, so kids can see sloths and frogs up close; most tours offer child prices.
- Ask about stairs. Hillside hotels, especially in Manuel Antonio and Uvita, can involve a lot of steps, which is hard with strollers.
- Plan for afternoon rain from May to November: active mornings, then pools and hot springs.
