Where to Stay in San José, Costa Rica

Most visitors spend only a night or two here, at the start or end of a trip. If you're just catching a flight, stay near the airport; if you want museums, markets and restaurants, stay in the city.

The Short Answer

For a night before or after a flight, stay near the airport in Alajuela. Juan Santamaría airport (SJO) is about 20 km from downtown San José, and city traffic can turn that into an hour. Our pick is the Hampton by Hilton San José Airport; for something special, Xandari is in the hills just above.

To see the city, stay in Barrio Escalante, a quiet, leafy neighborhood east of downtown with many of San José's best restaurants, or downtown by the National Theater if you want to walk to the museums and Mercado Central. Escazú and Santa Ana, west of the city, are upscale suburbs with malls and restaurants, convenient for the highway to the Pacific coast.

Times depend heavily on traffic, which is worst on weekday mornings and late afternoons. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are cheap and easy in the city; at the airport, the official orange taxis pick up at the terminal.

Is San José Worth a Night?

One day is enough for the highlights: the National Theater, the Gold Museum under Plaza de la Cultura, the National Museum and lunch at the Mercado Central. Downtown is fine to walk during the day; keep valuables out of sight and take a taxi after dark. If you'd rather head straight for nature, skip the city and drive to La Fortuna or Manuel Antonio on arrival, as long as you can get there before dark.
