The Short Answer

Stay near the park entrance (Puesto El Pilón) if your main goal is the waterfall: you'll be first on the trail at 8 am and back for lunch. Our pick is Río Celeste Hideaway; Hotel Catarata Río Celeste is the budget choice.

Stay in or above Bijagua, about 20 minutes from the entrance on a paved road, for cooler air, volcano views, a few restaurants and good-value lodges. Bijagua sits on Route 6 between Guanacaste and Upala, which makes it an easy stop between La Fortuna and the Guanacaste beaches.

Visiting Tenorio Volcano National Park

  • Buy tickets online in advance. SINAC sells Tenorio tickets online only, not at the gate, and there's a daily visitor cap.
  • Hours: open daily from 8 am to 4 pm, with last entry at 2 pm.
  • The hike: the trail to the waterfall, the blue lagoon and the Teñideros (where two clear rivers meet and turn blue) takes about 3 to 4 hours round trip and is often muddy. Wear shoes with grip.
  • The waterfall: you view it from the stairs above; the viewing platform at the bottom has been closed since storm damage in 2025.
  • No swimming anywhere in the park. Some lodges and private properties outside it have swimming spots.

Getting There and When to Go

From Liberia airport it's about 1.25 hours to Bijagua and 1.5 hours to the park, all on paved roads; from San José, about 3.5 hours to Bijagua. From La Fortuna, allow about 2 hours. The park road is steep in places with one-lane bridges, but a 4x4 isn't necessary.

The river is bluest after a few dry days. Heavy rain turns it cloudy, so February to April is the most reliable time. In the rainy season, plan to visit early in the day and keep a backup morning if you can.
