The Short Answer
- For calm water and an easy beach week: Flamingo, Potrero and Conchal, about an hour from Liberia. Our pick is the Westin Reserva Conchal, an all-inclusive on one of the clearest beaches in the country.
- For restaurants, surf lessons and nightlife: Tamarindo, 1.25 to 1.5 hours from the airport.
- For a short transfer and luxury resorts: the Papagayo Peninsula, about 40 minutes from Liberia, where the Four Seasons and Andaz sit on private bays.
- For a cheaper, low-key base with diving: Playas del Coco and Playa Hermosa, about 30 minutes from the airport.
Further south, Nosara and Sámara are part of Guanacaste too, but 2 to 3 hours from Liberia on slower roads, with a very different surf-and-yoga feel.
Guanacaste's Beach Areas Compared
| Area | Vibe | Swimming | From LIR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Papagayo Peninsula | Gated luxury resorts, golf, marina | Calm bays | 30–45 min |
| Playa Hermosa | Quiet, families, sunsets | Calm | About 30 min |
| Playas del Coco | Small town, diving, budget, bars | Fine, but not the prettiest sand | About 30 min |
| Flamingo, Potrero & Conchal | Upscale but relaxed, villas, all-inclusive | Calm and clear | About 1 hr |
| Brasilito | Tico village, budget, near Conchal | Calm | About 1 hr |
| Tamarindo | Lively surf town, most restaurants | Waves; surf schools | 1.25–1.5 hrs |
| Playa Grande | Surf, nesting turtles, quiet | Strong waves | 1.25–1.5 hrs |
From December to March, strong northeast winds often blow across the Papagayo area. They keep it cool and dry but can make boat trips choppy.
Playa Grande is part of Las Baulas National Marine Park. Leatherback turtles nest there from about late October to mid-February, and night visits are only allowed with official guides.

Getting Around Guanacaste
Fly into Liberia (LIR). From San José airport it is 4 to 5 hours to most of these beaches. A rental car is the easiest way to beach-hop, and the main roads are paved. Shared and private shuttles cover airport transfers if you plan to stay put.
Combining Guanacaste with La Fortuna is the classic Liberia trip: about 3.5 to 4 hours between them, with Río Celeste as an optional stop on the way.
When to Go
The dry season runs from about mid-December to April, with almost no rain, hot days and a brown, dusty landscape. From May to November the hills turn green and afternoon storms are common, but mornings are often clear; July usually has a short drier spell. September and October are the wettest months and the quietest for hotels.
