The Short Answer
Stay at Playa Cocles, 2 to 3 km south of Puerto Viejo town. It has a long surf beach with lifeguards, the best mid-range and boutique hotels, and town is a short bike ride away. Our pick is Le Caméléon.
Stay in town for nightlife, food and backpacker prices. Head further south to Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva or Manzanillo for calmer water, snorkeling and jungle lodges. Stay in Cahuita, 20 minutes north, for a smaller, sleepier village right next to its national park.
The Caribbean Coast's Areas Compared
| Area | Best for | To Puerto Viejo | Downsides |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cahuita | Quiet village, national park, budgets | About 20 min | Very few upscale hotels |
| Playa Negra | Black-sand beach, quiet, adults | Walk | Swimming can be rough |
| Puerto Viejo town | Nightlife, food, backpackers, the Salsa Brava reef break | You're in it | Noisy at night |
| Playa Cocles | Surf, boutique hotels, families | About 10 min by bike | Strong currents; swim near lifeguards |
| Chiquita & Punta Uva | Calm swimming, couples, jungle | 15–20 min by bike or car | Fewer restaurants at night |
| Manzanillo | Wildlife refuge, snorkeling, the end of the road | About 25 min | Remote, limited services |
Bikes are the main way to get around: most hotels rent or lend them, and the coastal road is flat. Take a taxi after dark between Cocles and town.

Getting to Puerto Viejo
- From San José airport (SJO): 4.5 to 5 hours via Route 32 through Braulio Carrillo National Park and Limón. The mountain section is often foggy and busy with trucks; landslides sometimes close it in heavy rain, so check conditions before you go.
- By bus or shuttle: direct buses run from San José, and shared shuttles connect Puerto Viejo with La Fortuna and Tortuguero.
- From Tortuguero: a boat south along the canals to Moín, near Limón (about 3.5 hours), then about an hour by road.
When to Go
The Caribbean coast doesn't follow the Pacific's seasons. Rain is possible in any month, but September and October are usually the driest, just as the Pacific is at its wettest. July is typically the rainiest month, followed by December, November and May. Sea conditions matter for snorkeling: on calm days, the reefs at Cahuita, Punta Uva and Manzanillo are the best on the coast.
