The wide sandy beach at Tamarindo with hills across the bay

Where to Stay in Tamarindo

Tamarindo is Guanacaste's liveliest beach town: surf schools, sunset bars and the widest choice of restaurants on the coast. Stay central to walk everywhere, or at either end of the beach for quieter nights.

The Short Answer

Stay at the south end of Tamarindo beach, between the center and Playa Langosta. It's quieter at night, the beach is calmer, and town is a short walk along the sand. Our pick is Capitán Suizo.

Stay in the center if you want to step out of your hotel into restaurants and bars; light sleepers should ask for a room away from the main road. Stay at Playa Langosta for villas and a romantic feel, or across the estuary at Playa Grande for stronger surf, empty beaches and, from about late October to mid-February, nesting leatherback turtles (viewing only with official guides).

Don't swim in the estuary at the north end of Tamarindo beach: it's home to crocodiles. Boat taxis cross it to Playa Grande.

Getting to Tamarindo

  • From Liberia airport (LIR): 1.25 to 1.5 hours on paved roads. Shared shuttles and private transfers are easy to book.
  • From San José airport (SJO): about 5 hours by road, or a short domestic flight to Tamarindo's airstrip.
  • From La Fortuna: 3.5 to 4 hours.

Tamarindo works without a car: you can walk the center and the beach, and tours pick up from hotels. Rent one if you want to explore other beaches like Conchal, Avellanas or Playa Negra.

Tamarindo or Somewhere Quieter?

If Tamarindo sounds too busy, Flamingo and Conchal are 30 to 40 minutes north with calmer water and fewer bars. For a surf trip with a jungle, yoga-retreat feel, look at Nosara, about 2 hours south.
